Sundahl Pens Op-Ed in Advance of Senate Hearing on Outer Space Treaty
On the eve of the May 23rd hearing by a Senate subcommittee about the relevance of the Outer Space Treaty, Prof. Mark Sundahl published an editorial in SPACE NEWS preemptively addressing issues that were likely to arise during the hearing. A draft Senate bill issued recently calls for consideration of the U.S. withdrawal from the Outer Space Treaty, the 1967 “Magna Carta” of international space law. In the op-ed, Prof. Sundahl clarifies how it is only because of the Outer Space Treaty that U.S. companies are able to operate freely in a peaceful and orderly space environment. He concludes that U.S. withdrawal would be a catastrophic for law and order in space. The editorial can be found here.
Professor Sterio Participates in City Club of Cleveland Foreign Policy Event
Professor and Associate Dean Milena Sterio participated in a panel discussion on the topic of “A New Foreign Policy? – ISIS, Middle East Peace, and the Trump Trip Abroad” on June 6. The panel discussion was part of the “Happy Dog Takes on the World Series,” which is organized by the City Club of Cleveland and co-sponsored by the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. Professor Kalir Interviews With XM-Radio on Supreme Court and the Travel Ban
On June 5, Clinical Professor of Law Doron Kalir was interviewed by XM Radio’s “The Morning Briefing” show on POTUS Talk Radio (Ch. 124). The interview discussed the DOJ Cert Petition to the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as its Motion to Stay the 4th Circuit Order halting the effect of President Trump’s “Travel Ban.” The interview covered issues such as the likelihood of a circuit split, a possible recusal of Justice Ginsburg, the latest Presidential tweets, some word choice by the 4th Circuit’s decision, and the possibility – though remote – that the Supreme Court will refuse to take the case at all. This was Professor Kalir‘s third appearance on the show.
Professor Kalir Presents at Tikkun Leil Sha’vu’ot
On Tuesday May 30, Professor Doron Kalir presented at Tikkun Leil Sha’vu’ot, a community-wide event hosted by Bnei Jeshurun Congregation. Over 300 guests enjoyed a variety of lectures offered by Halachic, legal, medical, and social experts on a wide array of issues, in a night dedicated by the Jewish calendar to text study, review, and reflection. Professor Kalir‘s presentation was entitled: “Be’re’shit Ba’ra Elo’him: What Really Happened ‘In the Beginning'”? It focused on the philosophical, theological, and textual implications of the first three words in the Jewish Bible. It was Professor Kalir‘s fifth presentation at this annual community event.
Professor Sterio Presents at ICC Experts Seminar at Washington University School of Law
Professor and Associate Dean Milena Sterio participated in an Experts Seminar on the International Criminal Court (ICC) on June 1st at the Washington University School of Law. Professor Sterio presented as part of a session on “Teaching About the ICC- Challenges Encountered and Potential Resources.” Professor Sterio is a member of a newly formed ICC Scholars’ Forum, an academic expert group on the ICC, which was established during the June 1st Seminar.
Professor Sterio Participates in “Talking Foreign Policy” Radio Show on WCPN/90.3
Professor and Associate Dean Milena Sterio participated as a panelist in the radio show “Talking Foreign Policy” on Monday, May 29, which was taped and broadcast by WCPN/90.3., the Cleveland-area NPR affiliate. The show, of which Professor Sterio is a regular participant, is a one-hour radio program hosted by Dean and Professor Michael Scharf of Case Western Reserve University Law School. This episode focused on the Trump Administration and international law, and, in addition to Professor Sterio, other panelists included John Bellinger, former Legal Advisor to the State Department in the George W. Bush Administration, Professor Paul Williams, American University Washington College of Law, and Dr Shannon French, Director of Case Western Reserve University’s Inamori Center for Ethics and Excellence. Professors Kalir and Robertson Participate in Anti-Defamation League Leadership Summit
Professors Heidi Gorovitz Robertson and Doron Kalir participated in Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) National Leadership Summit. The Summit took place in Washington D.C., between May 7-9. It featured prominent thought leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds, who discussed, among others, the rising tide of antisemitism and hate speech, challenges facing the immigrant community, the current state transgender persons, and the current crisis facing the criminal justice system. The Summit culminated in a visit to the Hill, which included presentations by Senators John McCain, Al Franken, and Ben Cardin, as well as a visit to Rep.Marcia Fudge’s chambers to advance ADL’s values of tolerance and justice for all. Rep. Fudge is a proud Alumna of Cleveland-Marshall.
Professor Robertson, who is the C|M|LAW’s Steven W. Percy Distinguished Professor of Law, participated in the Summit as a member of the Glass Leadership Class. Professor Kalir participated as the Chair of that Class; he is also a Board Member of ADL Cleveland.
Professor Forte’s Essay Published by the Library of Law & Liberty
The Library of Law & Liberty published today an essay by Professor David Forte, which was based on a course on the Presidency that Professor Forte taught at Princeton University during the fall semester 2016. Professor Forte has been a visitor at Princeton University during the 2016-17 academic year. His essay is available here.
