On October 30, 2017, Professor Kevin O’Neill spoke at a Viewpoint Forum at Case Western Reserve University,  Freedom of Speech: Understanding Our Rights in Troubling Times. The other panelists were Case Western Reserve law professors Jonathan Adler and Jessie Hill. The presentation was moderated by Dan Moulthrop, CEO of the City Club of Cleveland.

Professor and Associate Dean Milena Sterio presented at the American Society of International Law (ASIL) Midyear Meeting on October 26, at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.  Professor Sterio presented on a panel entitled “Evaluating the Practice and Legacy of International Courts,” and her individual presentation was on “The Legacy of Ad Hoc Tribunals in International Criminal Law: Assessing the ICTY’s and ICTR’s Most Significant Legal Accomplishments.”

Professor David Forte’s presentation, at the conference entitled “John Marshall Landmark Cases,” aired on Saturday, October 28th, at 12:40 p.m. EDT on C-SPAN3 American History TV.  The presentation is available for viewing here. 

Heidi Gorovitz Robertson, C|M|LAW’s Steven W. Percy Professor of Law, participated in the State and Local Government Law Works-in-Progress Conference at Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, October 19 – 21, 2017.  In addition to serving as the primary commenter for a colleague’s paper, Professor Robertson presented an early piece of her current work-in-process Cities and Citizens Seethe: A Case Study in Piloting the Path of Oil and Gas Pipeline Permitting.  The paper focuses on citizen and local government efforts to influence the routing of the NEXUS/Spectra Energy pipeline proposed for central Ohio.

Professor and Associate Dean Milena Sterio presented at International Law Weekend 2017 in New York City, on October 20, on a panel entitled “Sequencing Peace and Justice in the Syrian Conflict.”  Professor Sterio also moderated a “New Voices” panel on October 21, at the same conference.  International Law Weekend 2017 is an annual international law conference jointly sponsored by the International Law Students’ Association and the American Branch of the International Law Association.  International Law Weekend this year took place at Fordham Law School, and at the New York City Bar Association.  Professor Sterio served as International Law Weekend 2017 Program Committee Chair.

Professor Forte presented an address entitled, “The Founders’ Freedom of Speech (and Ours)” at an event at the University of Buffalo dealing with “Free Speech on Campus.”  The event was co-sponsored by the ACLU, the Federalist Society, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, and the University of Buffalo Civil Liberties Union.

Professor Deborah Geier has agreed to join the Steering Committee of a newly created Cleveland chapter of the International Fiscal Association (IFA), spearheaded by Tom Callahan of Thomson Hine. The IFA is the leading nongovernmental, international organization dealing with tax matters and has more than 12,500 members worldwide in 111 countries, of which 68 have national branches. With nearly 1,000 members, the USA Branch, divided into 17 regions, is one of the largest. IFA USA  provides its members the opportunity to not only keep up to date on current issues and planning techniques but also to meet experienced tax experts from other countries, to strengthen professional relationships, and to rekindle friendships.
