Chris Sagers, the James A. Thomas Professor of Law, gave several presentations at eminent academic institutions this spring. In March, he presented his book, United States v. Apple: Competition in America, to the Cornell Digital Life Initiative at Cornell Tech, a program within Cornell Law School and Cornell University. His presentation was the Initiative’s first-ever wholly online seminar, conducted by Zoom in light of the coronavirus epidemic.

Earlier this spring, Sagers presented a paper at a symposium entitled “The Interplay of the Antitrust Laws in Our Current Business Environment,” hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Business Law at the University of Pennsylvania.

He also took part on a discussion panel concerning legal issues surrounding the legalization marijuana in Ohio, focusing specifically on issues raised in competition policy, held at the University of Cincinnati School of Law.

Chris Sagers, the James A. Thomas Professor of Law, was quoted by Reuters in a story carried in the New York Times, commenting on recent moves by the Trump administration and by some state regulators to shore up U.S. domestic oil prices, after they’ve been battered both by an ongoing price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia and by loss of demand during the coronavirus epidemic. Sagers, who studies antitrust law, explained how it might apply to efforts by regulators and to whatever private action U.S. producers might take themselves.

On February 27, 2020, Professor Heidi Gorovitz Robertson participated on a panel at West Virginia University School of Law.  The symposium, Home Rule, a State and Local Law Symposium was hosted and organized by the West Virgina Law Review.  Robertson’s panel was entitled Home Rule and the Environment: Exploring how municipalities address environmental policy gaps including farmland solar policy and pipeline routing.

Robertson is C|M|LAW’s Steven W. Percy Distinguished Professor of Law and a Professor of Environmental Studies at the Levin College of Urban Affairs.

Professor Gwen Majette (second from left) spoke at the annual conference for the National Academy of Social Insurance, an interdisciplinary meeting that was held at the National Press Club in Washington DC.  The conference coincided with the release of a 10-month study, “Examining Approaches to Expand Medicare Eligibility Key Design Options and Implications” (March 2020).

Participants included leading scholars from universities such as Yale, John Hopkins, Princeton, the University of Chicago, and George Washington; experts from think tanks (Commonwealth Fund, Kaiser Family Foundation); policy makers (former senior advisors to Senator Grassley and President Clinton, OMB staffers, and former CMS Administrator Donald Berwick); and health journalists including writer-lawyer Katie Keith who writes the Health Affairs – Following the ACA blog.

Heidi Gorovitz Robertson served as the Academician on the ABA Section on Legal Education’s site team visiting the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for its sabbatical site evaluation for reaccreditation.  Robertson’s assignment was to gather and report to the ABA facts pertaining to UNLV Law School’s Program of Legal Education.  The site team spent 3 days at UNLV meeting with administrators, faculty, staff, and students, observing classes, and reviewing documents. Over the next 4 to 6 weeks, the team with compile a lengthy report for the ABA on this visit.

Robertson is C|M Law’s Steven W. Percy Distinguished Professor of Law and a Professor of Environmental Studies at the Levin College of Urban Affairs.

On Friday,  Feb. 28, Professors Reginald Oh and Doron Kalir presented at the American Constitutional Society’s Fifth Annual Constitutional Law Scholars Forum. The Forum, co-hosted by Texas A&M and Barry University Law Schools, took place in Orlando, FL. Professor Oh gave a lecture on “Dehumanization and Equal Protection Doctrine.” Professor Kalir presented a paper on “Constitutional Statutory Consistency and the Special Case of Title VII LGBTQ Litigation.” Both papers were very well received.

Professor Milena Sterio was appointed Co-Chair of the upcoming American Society of International Law Midyear Meeting’s Practitioners’ Forum.  The ASIL Midyear Meeting will be hosted by Case Western Reserve University School of Law from October 29-31, 2020 in Cleveland, and Professor Sterio will organize the Practitioners’ Forum, which accompanies the Midyear Meeting.  Professor Sterio has been a member of ASIL since 2006; she currently serves as Co-Chair of the International Criminal Law and the Women in International Law Interest Groups.

Professor Milena Sterio presented at a book roundtable at Temple Law School on February 21; the book roundtable convened experts in International Criminal Law to discuss Professor Darryl Robinson’s (Queen’s University Faculty of Law, Canada)  new book, “Exploring Justice in Extreme Cases: Criminal Law Theory Meets International Criminal Law.”  The Roundtable was hosted by Temple Law’s Institute for International Law and Public Policy.  Professor Sterio’s presentation will be published in the form of an article by the Temple Journal of International and Comparative Law, under the title “Darryl Robinson’s Model for International Criminal Law: Deontic Principles Developed Through a Coherentist Approach.”

On Friday, Feb. 21, Clinical Professor of Law Doron Kalir presented at Case Western Reserve University’s Lifelong Learning Program. The title was “Israel’s Upcoming Election: Lessons from the Past; Thoughts on the Future.”

During the hour-long program – called “Eastside Conversations” and modeled after the City Club’s famous Friday Forum – Kalir discussed the reasons that led us to an unprecedented third round of election in a row; the geo-political background that can shed light on the current political status; and some of the differences and similarities to the coming election here in the U.S.

Professor Milena Sterio participated in the Global Counter Terrorism Forum Criminal Justice Rule of Law Expert Meeting in Malta on February 11-13.  This Expert Meeting, co-chaired by Nigeria and Switzerland, focused on Criminal Justice Linkages between Terrorism, the Financing of Terrorism, Illicit Trafficking in Goods and Maritime Crimes.

Professor Sterio delivered a presentation on criminal justice linkages between terrorism and maritime crimes, including piracy.  The Global Counter Terrorism Forum is an inter-state organization, comprised of thirty states, and partners such as various United Nations agencies (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute), Interpol, the European Counter-Terrorism Centre, and international think tanks and NGOs.
