Professor Milena Sterio has been advising the Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG) on ongoing peace negotiations between the government of Sudan and rebel groups from the Darfur region. The PILPG is one of the peace negotiation facilitators, and the peace negotiations have been taking place in Juba, South Sudan. The peace negotiations resulted in a commitment by the Government of Sudan to hand over former Sudan president, al-Bashir, to the International Criminal Court, where an arrest warrant over al-Bashir has been pending since 2005. In particular, Professor Sterio provided expertise regarding the possible establishment of a Special Court for Darfur, which would investigate and prosecute those responsible for atrocities which have taken place in the Darfur region.
