Professor Kalir Co-Hosts an LGBTQ+ Group from Brazil

On Tuesday, November 5, Clinical Professor Doron Kalir participating in a meeting held by the Cuyahoga County Legal Department for a Brazilian team of LGBTQ activists, participants in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Attorney Awatef Assad, a County Deputy Legal Director (and a proud CM Law alumna) hosted the event; County Executive Armond Budish congratulated the delegation. The stated reason for the visit was Cuyahoga County’s recent anti-discrimination ordinance, which was the first of its kind in Ohio and one of the first in the nation. The ordinance is designed to curtail LGBTQ discrimination in the workplace and in public accommodation.
Professor Kalir, who assisted the County with its legislative efforts and testified before the County Council, was invited to provide general constitutional background relating to LGBTQ litigation and legislation efforts. He then responded to a plethora of questions from the Brazilian guests, including ones on religion, racism, political participation, and the role of the courts in designing social policy.
